Stache Some Cash For Men's Health

The month of October may be painted pink by a large health awareness campaign, but every year since 2004, November follows with a quickly growing campaign for men's health issues. The Movember movement rallies men to make themselves literally the face of prostate and testicular cancer initiatives by growing moustaches to raise awareness and funds for those causes. Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne, Australia, Movember has grown to become a truly global movement inspiring more than 1.9 Million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas to participate with formal campaigns in over a dozen countries including the US. By growing a moustache, men will often get asked about it which serves as an opening to talk about the movement and initiate the ask for support. This year, Well-Met is helping promote Movember events planned by the Milwaukee regional Network. Milwaukee Men participating on their own or as a team can link their efforts to the Milwaukee Network so we can show the world tha...

Braise Culinary School Introduction To Craft Spirits 10/30

Maybe its the fact its the day before Halloween, or two days before the launch of Movember, but the next Braise Culinary School's weekly Tuesday topic class as 'Introduction to Craft Spirits' seems just too perfect. Braise is a unique local food business comprising three parts: an RSA (restaurant supported agriculture), restaurant , and a culinary school all focusing on locally farmed food. Until I get a chance to do a proper review, (I have eaten there a few times, volunteered for an event, and attended one class so far) check out their web site for more information. At their culinary school they have classes Tuesdays and Thursdays. Thursdays are basic skills classes taught by chef and owner Dave Swanson himself while Tuesday classes are in lecture format featuring local experts on topics such as wine, coffee, beer, honey, cheese, and more. This time around Jason Neu from Great Lakes Distillery explains what makes Great Lakes a "craft" distillery, and wha...

The Pack Backs Parks, Help Build New Playground

The  Green Bay Packers  and the  NFL  recently announced a new partnership between the Milwaukee County Parks  and  United Way  as part of the NFL/United Way “ Hometown Huddle ” day of service. This is the first year that the Packers will focus the NFL/United Way “Hometown Huddle” in Milwaukee County, with all previous efforts having occurred in Green Bay. “We are very thankful for the team’s support and hope that we can continue this partnership into the future,” Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said. The Hometown Huddle allows teams to showcase their collective support for  NFL PLAY 60  through playground and indoor fitness zone builds and hosting health and wellness activities for youth in local communities. NFL PLAY 60 encourages children to be active for 60 minutes every day to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity. The Packers and NFL gave a generous donation for a new playground at Smith Park . Buy American - Little or Big step to being a Locavore?

In recent years I have tried to grow myself into being a Locavore one step at a time. The Locavore movement started with food - trying to buy food as close to you (local) as possible. The benefits of this are many from getting better food, to reducing shipping costs and impacts (transport vehicle emissions), to supporting local businesses and people. At the store I try to buy as much as possible from the closest sources - local dairies such as Sassy Cow, local bakeries such as Brownberry bread, I was already a fan of local micro-breweries and vintners. I have signed up for a CSA - community supported agriculture - buying a share in a farm (that happens to be friends) to in turn get a weekly supply of produce during growing months. We started growing our own vegetables in raised bed gardens. I even just started brewing my own beer. Initially this seems like a Green movement. And yes, it started there. Seeking to reduce the impact on the environment was a major impetus for the Locavor...

Great Play: Brewers’ 2nd Baseman Rickie Weeks Donates $25,000 To Y Swim School

The YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee today announced it has received a $25,000 donation from Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Rickie Weeks to help support the Y’s Swim School. Swim School is a community supported learn-to-swim program hosted at the Northside YMCA designed to help urban youth learn to be safe in and around water. The program is offered to second and third graders who attend school in Milwaukee’s Lindsey Heights neighborhood. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 14, and African American children ages 5 to 14 are three times as likely to die from drowning as white children. Lack of access to public swimming pools, along with a negative perception of water, contributes to these statistics.

Heview: eShave Shave Cream

In our Heview series - reviews for he rather than she - we review products or services made or marketed specifically towards men. This time we are looking at a product by a company called êShave . êShave, as you can tell by the name, is fairly new. Based in New York, it was founded in 1996 as a manufacturer of men's shaving supplies and promotes the art of classic shaving with shaving tips & advice. By classic shaving they mean using a brush to lather up the cream not necessarily classic razors as well, as they only sell modern multi-blade razors - albeit with their own custom handles.

October Is Adopt An Animal Month

Depending on where you look, October may be listed as Adopt a shelter animal, dog or car specifically, or generally adopt a pet. However you word it, the cause is near and dear to my heart as an animal welfare volunteer in Milwaukee. I have talked about adopting pets and the state of homeless animals in the Milwaukee area before , so I won't get into it all here, but I will ask you to explore it and implore you to think about it next time you are looking for a pet. While any pet can bring joy into your household's life, an adopted pet adds that extra feeling because you are saving a pet and can truly find one that will fit in ways that buying one never can. Of course, we really mean adoption  awareness , not that you should necessarily adopt this month - after all taking in an animal is an important decision left for when you can make it best. Our newest adopted family member Lela after swimming Whether you are looking for any old mutt, or even a pure bred pooch, you can ...
