It may seem as if the world goes pink every October, and while we fully support the efforts, this is a man's blog. I have personal connections to breast cancer, I myself had a mastectomy when I was a child to remove what was thankfully a benign tumor in my chest, and I just visited with a close friend of my wife's that had and did the same thing as Angelina Jolie (a radical double mastectomy). But there are not only other cancers out there, but other campaigns to support and research them. This being a blog about making men greater, every year we help promote one near and dear to our heart - well a different organ - Movember, the champion of prostate and testicular cancer.
Movember participants are hosting local events across the US on Movember 1 to kick off the moustache movement to change the face of men’s health. To date, Movember has funded over 570 programs in the areas of education and awareness, living with and beyond cancer, and research. Details about Movember funded programs can be found in the Program Index.
Movember, a registered 501(c)(3) charity, aims to forever change the face of men's health through the power of the moustache, by raising vital awareness and funds for men's health issues to combat prostate and testicular cancer and mental health challenges. Movember programs are focused on awareness and education, living with and beyond cancer, and research to achieve our vision of an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. Since 2003, three million participants have raised over $446MM for the cause, funding more than 570 programs globally, with official Movember campaigns taking place in 21 countries. Movember is fully accredited by the Better Business Bureau, and for the past two years, has been named a Top 100 best NGO by The Global Journal. For more information please visit Movember.com.

As the official rules of Movember state, all Mo Bros (male participants), once registered, must begin
clean-shaven on the 1st of Movember and grow just a moustache (no beards, no goatees) for the 30 days
of November. Shave the Date: Movember 1 is the kick-off event for Mo Bros and Mo Sistas (female
participants) to start the month off right in support of Movember, the global men’s health charity that
raises awareness and funds for men’s health through the power of the moustache.
Though the campaign started outside the US, we have started to embrace it and the men of Milwaukee have led the charge. If you have been around for a while you know we have had some good inspiration for growing a moustache mainly among Milwaukee Brewers including Rollie Fingers, Gorman Thomas, Robin Yount and as recent as John Axford (who was an actual Movember participant) but in the past few years you may have noticed the Packers' Aaron Rodgers and even coach Mike McCarthy sporting the lip jacket during Movember. With such awesome inspiration we have rocked the US Movember scene, last year the Movember Milwaukee Network had 341 registered members across 34 teams in southeastern Wisconsin, the goal of 300 participants/30 teams/$30k was surpassed on the way to bringing in $51,628 finishing only behind Boston, Dallas, Houston, New York, and Chicago - we even topped such Mo-friendly places as Austin, Denver, even hipster-haven and Mo-home Portland.
This year we look to topple that effort once again and move up in the ranks. Things kick off Movember 1st with the 2nd Annual Movember Shave-Off Party from 6pm to 10p at Stag Barbershop. They are offering $15 shaves (first come first serve) and donating all proceeds to Movember. Complimentary beverages and appetizers will be provided by Stubby's Gastrogrub & Beer Bar.
Another way Milwaukee is getting together to raise funds is through The Mo Run, the hairiest 5K race around, on Movember 10. As a supporter and champion of Movember we will post any and all events we hear of at our Calendar so check back often.
“The Movember 1 2013 shave down is a symbolic rite of passage for Mo Bros to officially join Generation
Moustache and celebrate Movember’s 10th annual campaign,” said Mark Hedstrom, US Country Director
for Movember. “Shave the Date: Movember 1 encourages all registered participants to unite and get
ready to grow or support the Mo for the 30 days of November.”
