Carbon Monoxide Detectors: The New Smoke Alarms - A Literal Wake Up Call

This small, cheap device could save your life one day Everyone knows how dangerous Carbon Monoxide is, but a lot of people believe that it won't happen to them. But just as smoke alarms were scarce, and still are rare in many communities, despite being required by law , the detectors are probably missing in most homes. Just like the last story on male breast cancer, this one has a personal take, not me, but my parents this time. They recently had an incident where a detector very well could have saved their lives so I am glad they had one. Here is my dad's account. Thanks dad for chronicling what hopefully will open others' eyes.

TMJ Male Breast Cancer Story Hits Home

Milwaukee TV station TMJ4 recently did a story on ' A candid look at male breast cancer ' covering 620AM radio personality Jim Peck's personal encounter with a breast cancer scare. We always try to increase men's health awareness, and the men's cancers always take a prominent place in awareness and fundraising efforts, but this story is different. Not only is it an atypical cancer, usually thought of only for women, but it is personal since I had a breast cancer scare myself.

Community Celebrates Brass Rooster's National Honor

Brass Rooster Owners John & Kate McLaughlin receiving their check from US Cellular Back in Novermber we reported that Milwaukee's own   The Brass Rooster  won U.S. Cellular's very first Spotlight on America’s Backbone Contest . Last night we were luck enough to join the community in helping Owners & Operators John and Kate McLaughlin celebrate the official receipt of the award. US Cellular may have created, awarded, and presented the award but it was the community that celebrated alongside Brass Rooster. Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele was there to honor the couple and City of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett, though not able to make it, sent a declaration celebrating the feat and declaring yesterday 1/23 Brass Rooster Day in Milwaukee. But while there were all of those bigwigs there, it was Brass Rooster and their neighbor small businesses that took center stage.

Packer Fans - Nicest Ever?

This is how a rival fan was received in Green Bay Canada may be said to have the nicest people on the planet, but we Wisconsinites are close in geography and if you ask us on par or even better in hospitality. As it turns out, its not just what we think of ourselves but others as well - including rival fans of our beloved Packers. WXRT radio from Chicago, home of our rival Bears, just featured a post from a host (hey that rhymes) who happens to be a 49ers fan and watched his team just eke out a win (did you see how close the game ending FG got to being blocked?) over the Pack at Lambeau. In the post, and many comments by Illinoisans, he proclaims his admiration for how nice the fans at Lambeau were to him - even in defeat.

More MKE Bar Love In DRAFT Magazines 2013 Best Bars

Palm Tavern got the prime spot in the Midwest region article Just yesterday we posted about Milwaukee having 2 of the 40 best bars in America as picked by Food & Wine Magazine and today we just read of more love coming our way. DRAFT Magazine just released their annual list for 2013 of their picks of Best Beer Bars and Milwaukee was represented well again with 3 of the 28 picks for the Midwest including Palm Tavern, Roman's Pub, and Sugar Maple. All three return to the list having been on previous years and Palm got special recognition.

MKE Has Best Bars In America - Again

The bar at Braise Restaurant was recognized along with Distil in Food & Wine's Best Bars in America We may be known first as a city of beer drinkers, but Milwaukee is also being acknowledged along with our growing food scene for our superb cocktails. Back in 2013 Esquire magazine named Bryant's the Best Bar in America as OnMilwaukee.com reported and we even had another top-five bar in Koz's Mini Bowl .  Well, the kudos keep coming in as Food & Wine included 2 Milwaukee bars in their list of 40 Best Bars in America    - the bar at Braise Restaurant and Distil .
